Hi, we’re the muirheads!

Our journey growing and harvesting wild rice began in 2015 when we were asked to crop share with a pillar in the wild rice community in Canada, Riese’s Canadian Lake Wild Rice! We knew from the moment we arrived at the secluded wild rice camp that we wanted the pristine lake to be a fundamental part of our northern family.

Fast forward to today, and we operate independently as Against the Grain Wild Rice. We have TransCanada Organic Certification (TCO). We proudly continue the lake’s legacy by maintaining ethical and sustainable harvesting practices. We are proud to support and work alongside northern people by providing employment at our wild rice camp. To see more about our business and where we harvest, follow the YouTube link on the top left corner of our webpage.

We welcome all inquiries on purchasing our wild rice product.

A little bit of history on wild rice in Saskatchewan…

“Wild rice, a type of aquatic grass was first introduced in the northern parts of Saskatchewan in the 1930’s as food for muskrats to support the trapping business in the area. It is a crop that has been of great importance to First Nations for generations. Today, northern Saskatchewan produces the majority of wild rice in Canada. The rice grows wild and self-seeds in shallow lakes and rivers. Harvest areas are leased from the government and the majority of harvesters in the area are members of First Nations. The production supports the local economy and provides job opportunities.”

Unique

Some of the worlds best wild rice comes from Northern Saskatchewan. We have unique growing conditions that allow the grain to mature over our summer months into the high quality product you receive on your plate. All we have to do is hope and pray Mother Nature is on our side with low winds and water over the growing season!
